Name: Aria Dalton
Age: 36
Squad: Major Case
Physical Description: Aria is 130 lbs, 5'8" with a thin frame, long wavy dark brown hair that flows past her shoulders and very intense dark brown eyes.
Background: Aria was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA by Sam and Julie Monroe near Silver Lake. Sam Monroe was a street cop and Julie was a nurse at a local hospital. As an only child, she had a pleasant childhood growing up with her parents in the suburbs until a tragic car accident claimed their lives when she was only seven years old. She was sent to live with her father’s brother, Jimmy Monroe, her last living relative. He was a police captain in Robbery-Homicide at the time. Over the next seventeen years they held a close bond that followed Aria into college and then into the Academy.
Following graduation from high school, she was accepted to UCLA and spent five years in the undergraduate program working on double majors. She earned her bachelor degrees in English and applied mathematics before entering the academy at age 22, determined to be a cop like her uncle. After graduation she spent four years on the beat until a recommendation from her uncle, who was working as special adviser to the Police Board of Commissioners then, helped give her early admission to the detective's exam. She passed with flying colors and was immediately reassigned to Burglary Auto Theft Division as a Detective I. Spending a year and a half there, she racked up enough arrests leading to convictions that her uncle and C.O. again recommended that she be reassigned to another division. Unfortunately, before the reassignment was completed, her uncle died of a heart attack, a second tragedy in her life.
At the time, Robbery-Homicide was severely understaffed by detectives and overflowing with cases, so they begrudgingly accepted her into the squad with little complaint at her lack of experience. Her first year handed her six partners, all treating her as inferior or stupid. It wasn't until she was partnered with Det. Ryan Dalton that she found some sense of normalcy. Together, they made up one of the most successful partnerships in the squad. Months later, this partnership led to a close, intimate relationship and at age 32 Aria married Ryan. They spent another year together until tragedy struck for a third time in her life. While chasing down a serial killer on foot, Ryan was shot and killed on November 20, 2001. The killer was never caught, a fact that continues to haunt Aria to this day.
Unable to cope with more loss, she took a sabbatical. During her period of mourning, however, she quickly came to realize that she was pregnant. Eight months later she gave birth to her son, Reese, on July 13, 2002. With his birth came revitalization for Aria and she returned to work. Now partnered with Jason Kidd, a wise-cracker and a good friend who had become her partner after she had started dating Ryan, Aria found a new sense of duty and determination in her job not to let tragedy touch the lives of others as it had touched her. This helped lead her to a successful and brilliant career. Receiving two letters of commendation, Aria blew away the traditional standards of police work with her close analytical approaches to interviews and interrogations, using any number of techniques to solicit the answer she needed. The arrest and subsequent conviction of Robert Parkers, a serial killer that had haunted the ghettos of LA for nearly two years, earned her a promotion to Detective II by the age of thirty-five.
She spent a total of six years in L.A. Robbery-Homicide until New York City recruited her. Eager for a new change and a new life, she agreed and moved to Manhattan. She currently resides there and recently was assigned to the Major Case Squad, though she was demoted to detective second grade for political/transfer reasons. Her son, Reese, is now five years old. He has become her heart and soul.
Personality: Aria adopted her sarcastic, sardonic, and wise-cracking attitude from her uncle, a man of similar personality. With so much loss in her life, she has come to rely on it to get her through the difficult times. Crying is not something she knows how to do very well, so she keeps from doing it as often as she can. To her, it’s a sign of weakness that she cannot permit to show for the sake of her son. While she does respect all forms of authority, she has often been reprimanded for insubordination towards her superior officers, usually for disagreeing or flat out refusing to fulfill and order given. If Aria believes it to be wrong then she will stick by her beliefs, no matter what. It has become a blessing and a curse.
Quirks: Aria has a habit of pulling out a pint of Ben and Jerry’s when she’s nervous or lonely, so her freezer is always stocked with Chubby Hubby and Cookie ‘N Cream. She is also in the habit of dressing however she likes, whether it is jeans versus sweats or a sweater versus a blouse. So far she has been allowed to get away with this. She does have one strong weakness with her job and that is crimes where the victims seek out their own justice on the wrongdoers. Often she finds herself siding with the victims, making it more difficult to be objective and clear when investigating. She can all too easily sympathize, having often imagined what she would do if ever Ryan’s killer was caught.
